Tree Preservation & Burning

Tree Preservation

Trees are critical to the Village’s unique environment, that is why some species are protected by the Heritage Tree Preservation Ordinance. If you are planning to remove trees from your property please review the ordinance and contact the Village before cutting down any trees.

Burning

Barrington Hills is one of the few municipalities which allows burning on residential properties. Please be courteous to your neighbors and safe!

Burning regulations include but are not limited to:

  • A max of 3 hours total per day
  • Only between 10am and 10pm
  • Fire must be at least 100 ft from any structure

  • Fire must be constantly attended
  • Means of extinguishing the fire must be be immediately available
  • You may only burn dry firewood, landscape waste, or untreated/painted lumber

Burning

Given the large 5-acre lot sizes in the Village, copious amounts of landscape waste are generated, and as a result, Barrington Hills is one of the few municipalities which allows burning on properties. Restrictions include:

  • Only between 10am and 10pm
  • Burn location must be at least 100 feet from any structure
  • Fire size limited to 5 feet x 5 feet x 5 feet
  • Fire must be constantly attended
  • Extinguishing equipment must be immediately available for use, i.e. fire extinguisher, water, shovel, etc.
  • Material shall consist only of dry firewood, landscape waste, or untreated/painted lumber which is produced or obtained for use on the premises where the materials are burned
