SUMMARY:Barrington Youth and Family Services Gala: An Evening in Old Havana
DESCRIPTION:Barrington Youth & Family Services Unveils Theme for Upcoming Fundraising Gala:\n¡Viva! An Evening in Old Havana \nBarrington\, Illinois – November 21\, 2016 – Barrington Youth & Family Services (BYFS) invites the community to join us at our annual fundraising gala\, as we jet-set back in time and experience the grandeur of Old Havana. Barrington Hills Country Club will be transformed for the evening of April 22\, 2017 to reflect the romance of 1950s Cuba\, a time when the tropical island served as an exotic playground for the likes of Ava Gardner\, Frank Sinatra and Ernest Hemingway. \nThe BYFS Auxiliary Board\, led by co-chairs Lara Kercinik and Tiffany Marshall\, is responsible for planning and hosting the annual event\, which aims to raise $200\,000. “There’s so much inspiration in the culture of 1950’s Havana – the music\, the food\, the way people dressed\, the overall vibe. It’s going to be so much fun to take our guests back to that place and time for a night!” says event co-chair Tiffany Marshall. \nThe mission of BYFS\, which was founded in 1972\, is to offer counseling\, education\, and prevention solutions to support the social\, emotional\, and psychological well-being of youth and their families in the Barrington area. BYFS is a vibrant\, innovative\, go-to agency that collaboratively responds to the social and emotional needs of the community. “We believe that by helping children and their families\, we build the strength of the entire community” says Rita Rippentrop\, Executive Director of BYFS. She adds “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year\, and the money raised will go directly back into the community for vital services\, including counseling\, peer mentoring\, healthy relationship development\, violence prevention\, and addiction prevention and treatment.” \n“Every community faces challenges with regards to mental health. Barrington is fortunate to have BYFS and it is important that we continue to support their programming\, services and mission. Fundraising efforts not only increase awareness\, but they also help to reduce stigma. We are excited to keep the momentum going and look very forward to another successful gala in April” says event co-chair Lara Kercinik. \nEvent tickets are $185 per person and will be available online in mid-March. For event details\, sponsorship opportunities\, or information on auction items\, follow Barrington Youth and Family Services on Facebook and Instagram or contact auxiliary board member Meghan Clarke at meghan.clarke@outlook.com or (312) 465-0455.

SUMMARY:CFC plant Sale May 6-7
DESCRIPTION:Citizens for Conservation will hold its 21st annual Native Plant\, Shrub and Tree Sale on Saturday May 6 and Sunday May 7\, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The sale will be held in the Good Shepherd Hospital barn area\, east of the hospital\, at 450 W. As part of CFC’s Milkweed for Monarchs campaign to encourage monarch populations\, numerous varieties of native milkweed will be available at discounted prices. Shoppers are also encouraged to bring their own wagons to help transport their purchases. \nPre-sale online ordering will be available March 1-April 12. All the plants for the sale may be ordered online which makes it more likely you will get what you would like before they run out at the sale. There are huge varieties of plants available at the sale itself. Orders are filled on a first-come-first-filled basis\, so order early. Pickup date for preorders is Friday\, May 5\, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. If you have orders to pick up\, you may shop on Friday as well. CFC members will also be able to shop the sale on May 5\, and members get a 10 percent discount all days. \nThe online store will be on CFC’s website\, www.citizensforconservation.org. beginning March 1. SUMMARY:2017 Torch Run
DESCRIPTION:On June 4\, 2017\, at 8:00am\, the Barrington Hills Police Department will take part in Leg 15 of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. The run will begin at the Barrington Hills Police Department at 8:00 a.m. and end 18 miles later at Knox Park\, in McHenry\, Illinois. This will be just one of the twenty-three legs (routes) kicking off the Law Enforcement Torch Run\, as law enforcement throughout Illinois will carry the Flame of Hope nearly 1\,500 miles\, running through hundreds of communities to the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games on June 9\, in Bloomington-Normal. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois and has two goals: to raise money and to gain awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois. \nApproximately 3\,000 officers representing every branch of law enforcement across the state from local police officers to FBI agents are involved in the Torch Run. In addition to donations for running\, officers raise money in various ways throughout the year\, such as the Polar Plunge\, Plane Pull\, Truck Convoy\, Tip-A-Cop events\, golf tournaments and more. \nThe Torch Run began in 1981\, when Wichita Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw a need to raise funds for\, and awareness of\, Kansas Special Olympics. Illinois became involved in the Torch Run in 1986\, with less than 100 runners carrying the torch along five legs\, but the seed was planted for future growth. Since 2015\, the Illinois Torch Run has consistently raised $4 million for the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois. \nAcross the United States\, law enforcement officers carry the Special Olympics Torch on through blizzards in Alaska\, the daunting Florida Everglades\, the endless farm lands of the Midwest\, and the deserts of Arizona to bring the torch to the Opening Ceremonies of their state’s Summer Special Olympics Games. \nWith the worldwide dedication of more than 97\,000 police officers\, Secret Service and FBI agents\, military police\, sheriffs\, state troopers\, prison guards and other law enforcement personnel in 50 states\, and 46 nations\, more than $51 million is generated annually and raises huge amounts of awareness for Special Olympics athletes. \nDonations can be made payable to “Special Olympics Illinois” and sent to the Barrington Hills Police Department – Attention Torch Run\, 112 Algonquin Road\, Barrington Hills\, Illinois 60010. To volunteer for the Law Enforcement Torch Run\, or if you would like additional information\, please contact Sergeant Ron Riedel\, at the Barrington Hills Police Department\, 847-551-3006\, or email at rriedel@vbhpd.net. \nAdditionally\, if you would like to purchase a Harley Davidson Raffle ticket for $10.00\, please contact Sergeant Ron Riedel. The winner of the Harled Davidson Raffle will receive a 2017 HD Street Glide\, valued at more than $20\,000. The drawing will be held on Friday\, October 20\, 2017\, at 1:00p.m.\, at which time six tickets (finalists) will be drawn. One of the finalists will win the new Harley and the others will receive a big-screen HDTV\, valued at $700/each\, at an event to be announced later.
