With the certification of election results completed, Village Hall has been abuzz with much activity. Paula Jacobsen and Robert Zubak were presented with a special commendation recognizing them for their four years of service as Trustees to the Village of Barrington Hills.

Martin J. McLaughlin hit the gavel for the last time as Village President at a special Board of Trustees meeting, Monday, May 3, 2021. In his closing address, McLaughlin summarized his experiences as Village President during his eight-year tenure, sharing the highs and lows, and some of his favorite stories in a manner that only he could, and known and enjoyed by many. He recognized and expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the many people he crossed paths with during his journey. Those in a governmental capacity at all levels–be it with neighboring municipalities or one of Barrington Hills’ four counties, or government associations; Village boards, commissions, and committee members; village staff; volunteers; close friends and especially his family who supported him all these years were heartfully thanked and acknowledged. At the conclusion of McLaughlin’s address, the meeting was called to adjourn sine die, and the Village’s newly elected public officials were sworn into office by the Honorable Judge Samuel J. Betar III of Cook County’s Circuit Court.  Brian D. Cecola was sworn in as the Village’s 10th President serving a four (4) year term, and Trustees Laura S. Ekstrom, David Riff and Thomas W. Strauss were sworn in as Village Trustees to serve a four (4) year term. They join sitting Trustees Debra Buettner and Bryan C. Croll. Congratulations to all!

President Cecola struck the gavel for the first time calling the meeting to order and asking for a motion to appoint Colleen Konicek Hannigan to fill his vacant Trustee seat.  Colleen Konicek Hanigan, who served as Trustee for the past eight years and chose not to rerun, was unanimously approved to complete the remaining term expiring in 2023. Congratulations and thank you Trustee Konicek Hannigan!

President Cecola’s next item of business was a Resolution of Proclamation appreciating Martin McLaughlin for his eight years of dedicated service to the Village and, once passed, Cecola read the Proclamation aloud and presented former President McLaughlin with mementos of appreciation: a framed first edition The Hills Are Alive Festival T-shirt, an annual event that McLaughlin launched at the beginning of his presidency bringing family, friends and the community together, and a “Chairman of the Boards” Mini Marty Bobblehead.

The meeting concluded with cake and coffee in recognition of McLaughlin’s time served and welcoming the new Trustees.
