Equestrian Heritage

An Equestrian Heritage

Barrington Hills has long been known for “equestrian living”. The rolling terrain provides a serene canvas for Chicago’s “horse country.” In addition to the existence of equestrian farms and backyard barns, the Village offers beautiful trails, several clubs and sporting events for horse enthusiasts.  The identification of the area with horses even carries over to the names Broncos and Colts for school team mascots.

Backyard Barns & Stables

One of the most distinctive aspects of Barrington Hills is the ability for residents to enjoy housing, raising, riding and breeding horses on their own properties.

Riding Trails

Barrington Hills includes over 150 miles of private and publicly owned trails on 3,800 acres of forest preserve where neighbors can visit one another on horse, or just enjoy a private trail ride for themselves.

The Riding Club of Barrington Hills

The Barrington Hills Riding Club is a non-profit organization that creates and maintains interest in horseback riding and preserves equestrian traditions in the Barrington Hills countryside. The club works to obtain the best possible facilities for trail riding on private trails and on county-owned public trails and fosters social interaction between all members of the community who ride horseback and enjoy horses.

The Barrington Hills Polo Club

The Barrington Hills Polo Club is one of the few clubs in the world to offer both grass and arena polo year round.

Massbach & Fox River Valley Hounds

Members of the Fox Valley Hounds exercise hounds while riding horses on Horizon Farms, now a part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. These horse and hound exercises simulate a hunting tradition that began in Barrington Hills in 1940 and function as historic reenactments or pageants.

Fox River Valley Pony Club

Fox River Valley Pony Club (FRVPC) is a member organization of United States Pony Club; most of the club activities occur at the Barrington Hills Riding Center, on Bateman Road. Their members learn mounted sports including eventing (this is dressage, cross country jumping, and stadium jumping), pony games, and even tetrathlon (running, swimming, riding your pony, and target shooting).
