The Bank of Scotland branch’s history began in 1774 with the opening of branches in Dumfries and Kelso. By the end of the century, the Bank of the Scots had 27 branches. By 1860, they had 43, and by 1939, they had 265 branches. In 1853, the Bank of the Scottish made the first use of the electric telegraph, which had just been introduced in the 1840s. This was an important advancement for bankers as it allowed for instant communication.
