After 33 Years, Officer William Walsh Set to Retire This October

At the August 25, 2026, Board of Trustees meeting, the Village Board and Police Chief Kyle Murphy took a moment to recognize someone who has been a familiar, and often behind-the-scenes presence in Barrington Hills for the past 33 years: Public Information Officer (PIO) and Community Service Officer (CS0) William “Bill” Walsh.

Of significance, not only were his many years of dedicated service recognized, but also the announcement of his official retirement date of October 7, 2026.

Before an audience filling the MacArthur Board Room and the adjoining lobby, Police Chief Kyle Murphy took the podium to recognize Officer Walsh.

“Every organization hopes they can find that one person. The person who is loyal, committed, dependable and willing to do whatever needs to be done to make the organization better,” Murphy said. “For Barrington Hills, that person is William Walsh.”

Murphy went on to describe Walsh’s distinguished career with our Village, beginning in 1993 as a Communications Officer. Over the next 33 years, Walsh wore many hats, earning many titles during his evolving career:

Community Service Officer
Evidence & Property Custodian
Evidence Technician
Fleet Manager
Accreditation Manager
Forensic Technician for the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT)
MCAT Supervisor
Public Information Officer

Residents may think they don’t know Officer Walsh, but chances are, in one way or another, their lives were touched by his service and dedication. Officer Walsh is, in many scenarios, a behind-the-scenes guy, getting things done in his quiet manner: behind the camera, behind the paperwork, behind the accreditation, behind the scenes of major investigations, and his not-so-behind-the-scenes duties of managing traffic at Countryside School, at a special event, or at an unfortunate crash scene.

Chief Murphy touched upon Walsh’s key role as the Department’s accreditation manager. Through his tenacity and dedication, the Barrington Hills Police Department earned an incredible seven (7) consecutive CALEA accreditations (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies). For perspective, fewer than 5% of police departments achieve CALEA accreditation. This is a testament to the amount of work, attention to detail, and persistence that went into that achievement.

Baby Delivery Award? Yes! The recognition wouldn’t be complete without Chief Murphy highlighting a couple of stories that cannot be captured by a job title: the baby delivery and the 45-year-old homicide case.

Together with Officer Brian Baird (retired), PIO/CSO William Walsh answered the 911 call for roadside assistance, going to where Baby Jaxton was born–on the side of the road near Old Sutton and Algonquin Roads! (That’s one for the books!) The new parents were ever so grateful for the assistance they received, remarking, “…now we have the support here, and it made a world of difference…”

Chief Murphy highlighted Walsh’s determination in citing a homicide investigation dating back to 1979. Walsh worked with a genetic genealogist, developed a family tree, and eventually identified the victim, bringing closure to the family after 45 years!

Following Chief Murphy, Village President Brian Cecola took the podium to share his own reflections on Officer William “Bill” Walsh and their 11-year working relationship.

He spoke warmly about his time working with Bill, describing him as a person with a “heart of gold” and jokingly referring to him as “Mr. CSI”, prompting Walsh to crack a smile, which Cecola was pleased to earn. He said Bill has always been someone to count on, was a pleasure to talk to, and above all, “just a great guy.”

Cecola acknowledged the significance of 33 years of service, noting that spending 33 years at any job is an incredible accomplishment. On behalf of the Village, he personally thanked Bill for his dedication and the many ways he has served our community.

To formally commemorate Officer Walsh’s extraordinary career, President Cecola, on behalf of the Village Board, presented Officer Walsh with a Resolution of Proclamation recognizing his 33 years of dedicated service and his many contributions to the Village of Barrington Hills.

The proclamation presentation concluded with Officer Walsh thanking President Cecola and the Village Board not only for the evening’s recognition, but also for their support throughout his many years of service to the Village. He acknowledged that many of his accomplishments and opportunities were made possible by the support of the Village Board, which enabled his Police Chiefs and Supervisors to entrust him with the many roles and responsibilities he took on throughout his career.

“It’s been a privilege and honor to serve in this profession, and I served it with great pride. I’m not only proud of the positions and responsibilities that I’ve held but of all the people that I had the privilege to work alongside,” said William “Bill” Walsh.

After 33 years of service, Officer William Walsh is finally trading in all those hats for a well-earned retirement. Although, knowing “Bill”, he’ll probably find another hat to wear!
