Barrington Hills residents are dedicated to conservation and preservation as highlighted by Crain’s Chicago Business’ Dennis Rodkin on July 20, 2023:

A Barrington Hills estate that sold for its area’s highest price in 11 years also has the unusual distinction of being used as a turtle sanctuary whose sellers bred thousands of turtles for release into the surrounding wetlands.

Bob and Denise Krause sold their 46-acre property, including a 9,000-square-foot house, on Healy Road for $5.6 million on July 18. The 46-acre estate, called Terrapin Ridge, was represented by Compass agent Heidi Seagren, who first listed it in February 2021 at $7.9 million.

Through Seagren, Bob Krause told Crain’s that when they bought the site in 2004, only two or three of every 100 turtle eggs that were laid on the property survived because of predators like raccoons and skunks digging up the nests.

The Krauses created nest cages, observed and cataloged the nests, and had an incubation facility in their home. Bob Krause told Seagren that they raised the survival rate to 15 out of 100 eggs, closer to the natural rate.

“They were proud to see the turtles reintegrated into the area,” Seagren said.
