Police Chief Kyle Murphy is pleased to announce that Officer Ryan Hackbarth, who finished first on the eligibility list, has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Sergeant Ron Riedel.
At the September Board of Trustees meeting, Sergeant Hackbarth was ceremoniously sworn in as Police Sergeant. Following the oath, his wife was asked to come forward to pin his star onto his uniform, as is the tradition.
A show of support from his fellow Department members filled the MacArthur Room, celebrating this momentous event.
Sergeant Hackbarth has served the Barrington Hills Police Department since 2018. He holds an undergraduate degree in Sociology from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in public administration. Since 2021, he has represented the department with the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Mobile Field Force, where he has taken on the challenging responsibilities of crowd control and conflict resolution during very high-stress situations.
The 2025 promotional process included a written exam, leadership and assessment exercises, and an oral interview from a panel of outside police chiefs. Sergeant Hackbarth’s excellent performance throughout the process earned him the top ranking.
We are excited to welcome Sergeant Hackbarth into his new leadership role and are confident in his ability to contribute greatly to the department and to the Barrington Hills community.
Congratulations, Sergeant Ryan Hackbarth!
