February: Peak of Coyote Mating Season

Coyote mating season is January through March, peaking in February. During breeding season, coyote partners stick closer together, reaffirming territory and getting ready for what’s ahead.
Residents are reminded to:
- Supervise pets when outdoors
- Haze coyotes to frighten them away (make loud noises, wave your arms, use a whistle or air horn)
- Do not feed coyotes and be sure to remove attractants, i.e., pet food, garbage/compost, and spilled bird seed (the seed attracts rodents, which attract coyotes)
Coyotes call our community home and live among us. It is important to understand their behavior so we can successfully coexist. To become coyote-smart and untangle facts from myths, visit Urban Coyote Research Project.
