ComEd says crews are closely monitoring the power grid as demand increases with more people relying on electricity to stay warm. Residents are encouraged to clear furniture and curtains away from heating vents, opening window shades during the day to let the sunlight in and closing them at night to keep the cold air out. When using a space heater, remember to plug it directly into the wall–not a power strip.

Extreme cold doesn’t always cause power outages; wind, ice and falling tree branches can lead to disruptions. Warming center links are listed below.
