Board Appoints Sgt. Kann to the Position of Interim Chief of Police

Effective today, Friday, July 26, at 4:01 PM, Sergeant David M. Kann will take on the duties of Interim Chief of Police to fill the vacancy in Office created by Police Chief Joseph Colditz’s retirement.
At the Board of Trustees Meeting on Monday, July 22nd, Kann was sworn into Office taking effect this afternoon.
“Sergeant Kann is a Senior Sergeant. I have known him throughout the years, and I am confident he will do an outstanding job in the interim. I have the highest respect for him and am honored he accepted our offer,” said Village President Brian Cecola.
Sergeant Kann began his law enforcement career in 1992 serving the Village of Fox River Grove. In 2000, he accepted the position of Patrolman with the Barrington Hills Police Department. Over the years, Kann has held several supporting roles within the Department, including:
- DARE officer
- IDOT Liaison officer
- Truck Enforcement officer
In 2005, Kann was promoted to Sergeant in the patrol division. In this capacity, his duties included:
- Supervision over the Traffic Unit
- Coordinated and Supervised DUI roadblocks
- Managed IDOT Traffic Safety Grants
- Supervised the Child Passenger Safety Program
- Worked in Investigations for a number of years.
Sergeant Kann is a graduate of Aurora University earning a Criminal Justice Degree and a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
Over his tenure, he has earned several awards and recognitions, including:
- Chief’s Award for Meritorious Service
- Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award
- Several Department Commendations.
“Thank you, Mayor, and thank you, Village Board, for your vote of confidence. It means a lot,” said Sergeant Kann after the Board’s unanimous vote to appoint him as Interim Chief of Police.
