Before starting your outdoor construction project, be sure to apply for a building permit. It’s fast and easy! If you’re not sure which projects require a permit, contact the Building Department by email at build@vbhil.gov, or call them at 847-551-3003.

The obvious projects for needing a building permit are, of course, building a new house or a large barn. But what about the not-so-obvious?

Here’s a condensed list to help you:

  • Accessory Buildings (coach house, detached garage, barn, shed, etc.)
  • Solar Panels
  • EV Chargers
  • Hardscapes (patios, outdoor kitchens, etc.)
  • Sport Courts
  • Pools
  • Earth Moving
  • Patio/Decks

The above list does not contain all the improvement types needing a building permit but the most common. Residents, contractors, etc., are encouraged to contact the Building Department about the requirements for a potential construction project before starting.

Fines for a construction project not having a building permit can run up to $2,500 per day!
Avoid the fine by calling the line: 847-551-3003.
