Fall is a good time to plant trees and shrubs, when roots can get established before winter’s cold weather. Citizens for Conservation’s Fall Native Tree and Shrub Sale will be held just in time for fall planting.

Online ordering for the sale begins on August 19. To order, go to www.CitizensForConservation.org for plant descriptions, growing conditions and habitat benefits. Those who prefer a paper order form can download one from the website or request one by email at cfc@citizensforconservation.org or phone 847-382-7283.

The plant sale order deadline is August 31, and plant pickup is Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at CFC headquarters, 459 W. Rt. 22, Lake Barrington. The sale is by preorder only; there will be no extra plants for sale on the pickup date.

Native trees and shrubs provide food and shelter for birds and butterflies; in addition, they provide the backbone of your landscape, raise your property’s value, reduce energy use and add beauty. Native trees and shrubs provide the best choices of woody plants because they absorb storm water, can survive our extreme temperatures, don’t need fertilizer or insecticides and need watering only during the first year or two until they become established.
