Illinois’ Move Over Law

If it’s flashing–MOVER OVER! It’s the Law!
On July 16, 20206, Governor JB Pritzker signed into law SB3164, updating Scott’s Law (aka Move Over Law) to strengthen protections for first responders and roadside workers, increasing consequences for drivers.
Drivers who fail to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles and cause injury or death will now have their driver’s license suspended or permanently revoked.
Rule to follow: If it’s flashing, move over.

Not familiar with Scott’s Law?
The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to any authorized emergency vehicle obviously and actually engaged in work upon a highway, whether stationary or not, and displaying flashing lights.
*Scott’s Law applies to all authorized emergency vehicles displaying flashing, oscillating lights, such as police vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, and commercial trucks and cars, including tow trucks and road repair vehicles. In addition, drivers must also yield to any pedestrian directly involved in an emergency scene.
